Elephant folio, comprising modern title page as above, 2 facsimiles of the titles to Parts 1 and 2 of Cary's New Map of England, 1820-21, 'Part I containing the Whole of Cornwall with a considerable portion of Devonshire' Part II 'containing the Remainder of Devonshire and Dorsetshire...'with an engraved hand-coloured 'explanation' key leaf, quarto size [presumably a separate issue], 8 double page fully hand-coloured folio double folio sized maps that together form complete surveys of Cornwall and Devon, their numbers in the quarto atlas as above, scale of half inch to one mile, FIRST EDITION THUS, an amazing example of this major English cartographer's work. This copy includes sheets 3 and 12 from the 1794 quarto atlas, with basic hand-colouring, demonstrating the extent of advances in cartography in the intervening years, with far greater detail, precise contouring and many other refinements all highlighted in a precise and elaborate colour scheme. This unique atlas is beautifully presented and formed part of an important collection of West of England topography. with the facsimile title pages to the parts [presumably taken from a library source] having inset key maps which have been highlighted to show which sheets are present in this atlas.
