32 engraved views of Persepolis contained within: An Universal History, from the Earliest Account of Time, Compiled from Original Authors. Volume Five. Published in London by T Osborne and A Millar, 1747.

DESCRIPTION: One volume, size 13 x 20.5 cm, with 426 pages of text relating to the History of Persia, authorship not given, but supposed to be John Campbell. There is one folding map entitled ' 'Persia sive Shahistan'. At the rear is bound 20 folding engraved plates comprising 32 views of Persepolis, some details of monuments and their artworks, some panoramic views of the ancient site in ruins as it looked at the opening of the 18th century. The illustrations in fact derive from the explorer traveller De Bruijn who visited the site in about 1703, and published his drawings in 1711.
The volume is bound in very pleasant contemporary full mottled calf, the spine gilt decorated with raised bands and double red/black labels. Provenance Sir Edward B Baker, with his bookplate.

SIZE: 21 X 13 cm.

CONDITION: The bindings has usual rubbing from age but is sound and attractive. The plates have minimal dust spotting, but a generally in excellent clean state.
