MARY OF TECK, [1867-1953, QUEEN OF ENGLAND 1910-1936].Queen Mary's copy of the BBC Hymn Book with music, signed by her.

DESCRIPTION: Oxford University Press for the BBC, 1951, unpaginated hymn book with words and music, finely bound by Sangorski and Sutcliffe in red crushed, polished morocco, the sides with triple gilt fillets and with 'MR' beneath crown monogram in gilt to upper board, spine gilt in panels between raised bands, inner gilt fillet lined dentelles, all edges gilt, FIRST EDITION, INDIA PAPER ISSUE WITH THE MUSIC, SIGNED 'MARY R 1951' TO THE FRONT FREE ENDPAPER.

This hymnbook was specially conceived for use in the BBC's daily service, and had been projected before the War, though only published in 1951. The ageing Queen, widow of King George V and mother of George VI, may well have desired a copy for Marlborough House for when she listened to the service daily. We can only surmise that she used this copy for her own private use, based on the assumption that if she had given it as a gift she would have written the same of the presentee. This is a very finely bound copy as befits a Queen, and a most charming momento of a popular monarch in her old age.
