Two nights in a haunted house in Russia, by the author of 'A night in a haunted house in Ireland'.[By Edward Tracy Turnerellli. Published London, Lionel Booth, Regent Street, 1873.

DESCRIPTION: Two Nights in a Haunted House in Russia was no 2 of Trunerelli's 'Christmas Tales for Christmas Charities. It comprisies 33 pages of preliminary matter, including advert page before the title detailing Turnerelli's charity fund raising from 1859 and the success of his first ghost story 'A Night in a Haunted House in Irleand' which has passed through 6 editions. The preliminary matter concerns reminiscences of the Russian Imperial family, intended to commemorate the marriage of the future King Edward VII to Queeen Alexandra in that year. The Ghost story itself occupies pages 1- 138, followed by a postscript and 'An Apology for a Ghost Story' finishing on page 150 printer's mark. The Books is bound in contemporary, and probably original olive morocco backed ribbed cloth by Birdsall, lettered in gilt to the spine.
This is the first edition - so designated on the title page - of a major Victorian ghost story, issued by the author at his own expenses as a charity raising effort. It is very rare and may have been issued in wrappers as the Cambridge University copy is titled 'In Aid of the Distressed' on the cover. The title was re-issued with another story by Turnerelli in about 1890 as 'A Russian Princess and a Russian Ghost Story' where it is described as '51st Thousand.' but we have discovered no other printings that Summers refers to.
Bound by Birdsall in a contemporary half olive morocco, spine gilt decorated.

SIZE: 12 cm x 18 cm.

CONDITION: The blank endpapers are lightly foxed and with contemporary name of 'Chloe Fielding' the binding lightly rubbed at extremities, else a very good copy throughout.
