A New and Improved Roman History from the Foundation of the City of Rome to its Final Dissolution as the Seat of Empire By Charles Allen, Second Edition, London, J, Johnson 1798.

DESCRIPTION: Octavo, Pagination, viii, 496 with four plates signed 'Blake:S'. Published Dec 1st 1797. Bound in contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt decorated with black label.

FURTHER COMMENTS

Second Edition, but the first to be illustrated having previously appeared in 1789 with no illustrations. The designs according to Keynes by Fuseli matching the four plates that Blake engraved for Allen's History of England from the previous year.

SIZE: Book: 183 x 110mm

Plates given by Bentley in Blake Books 416.

CONDITION: Binding rubbed and worn at spine ends, label chipped, overall binding sound with usual use for a textbook.
Internally: Presentation inscription - a reward for merit from Messrs School Hackney in 1802. The original owner 'G F Dixon' has made notes to the rear endpapers and occasional references to dates in the margins all quite neatly. One leaf is slightly chipped at margin, just touching a few letters. One plate with internal tear but no loss of surface and quite easily restorable. Plates otherwise in very good clean condition.

Overall a good copy especially for a text book of this kind in sound original state.
