Bound Collection of 7 Rare Prize Money Reports relating to the Anglo-Maratha Wars.

DESCRIPTION: Comprising the following:

1. DECCAN PRIZE MONEY. Copy of a King’s Warrant, dated 31st July 1832, authorising a Scheme for further Distribution of the Decan Booty.

T Spring Rice, Whitehall, [London], Treasury, [11th Aug 1832. 9 pages plus title docket for Mr Warburton. Folio, originally folded in 3. No original recorded in COPAC [links presumed to House of Commons copy]. The account is signed off by Wellington and others.

2. DECCAN PRIZE. Copies of the Letters from the Trustees of the Deccan prize to the Secretary of the Treasury. of 22 June 1825...28 September 1825.

London, Whitehall, Treasury, 29 July, 1839. 9 pages plus title, for ‘Mr Warbuton’, folio, originally folded in 3. Letters signed Wellington and others. No originals recorded in COPAC only copies.

3. DECCAN BOOTY. Copies of Letters etc... [Drop title]: Return to several Orders of the Honourable House of Commons, dated 2 August 1833.

London, Whitehall, 20 August 1833. 11 pages plus title, folio, originally folded in three.

4. DECCAN PRIZE MONEY. Copy of Memorandum dated 10 September 1825...sign by the Duke of Wellington.

London, Whitehall, 20 August 1833. 6 pages plus title leaf, folio, original folded in three.

5. To the Honourable the Court of Directors of the East India Company. The Memorial of E Prother, Widow of the late Col Prother, C.B. of the Bombay Establishment.

17 pages, drop head title as above, no place of printing. Not recorded in COPAC. On the final leaf ‘List of Forts in the Southern Concan.’

6 . ARMY PRIZE MONEY. Grant to the Combined Army which served under the Command of the late Most Noble Francis Marquis of Hastings...in the War against the Pindarees / Pindaris and certain of the Mahratta States in the years 1817 and 1818.

London, 1833. 4 pages, 2 single leaves, the second being the ‘form of bill’ for payments, folio.

7. ARMY PRIZE MONEY. Grant to the Troops of the Presidency of Bombay, which were detached with the Field Force under the command of the late Lieutent-Colonel Prother...

London, 20th December, 1833. 4 pages [last blank save for official stamp], folio, printed in red and black.Bound in neat modern marbled boards.

FURTHER COMMENTS

A rare collection of original documents unrecorded outside of office sources. Such huge sums of money were involved in the distribution of war ‘booty’ from the Indian Wars that the matter of correct distribution amongst regiments and their officers became a subject of government bureaucracy that dragged on for many years after the wars had finished and the armies withdrawn.
