Small Octavo (170 x 110 mm.), Engraved double page title, engraved double page dedication and 53 double page maps and tables, comprising 7 tables, 6 general maps of England and Wales, 40 double page county maps, engraved throughout and with contemporary wash colour [as issued], all mounted on guards, bound in contemporary calf, sides with gilt fillet borders, spine gilt ruled with raised bands and red label. . FIRST EDITION, EARLY ISSUE, from 1742 or shortly after with note at foot of title page 'Bound and coloured 12/-' This is no-doubt the original binding quite well preserved. An attractive pocket atlas, the first of its kind for the English counties, by the surveyor, Thomas Badeslade, engraved by W H Toms. With the bookplate and crest plate of Sir George Howard [1718-1796], eminent British Field Marshall of several Battles, both domestic and foreign.
