'Jersey Shipwright' Signed by artist Charles Paine - Original Watercolour on cardboard within old mount, so titled on back framing board, dated 1948

DESCRIPTION: Charles Paine is well known as one of the leading modernist poster and advertising designers of the pre War period, including many several notable designs for London transport.

After the war he settled at 7 Gorey Pier, Jersey in the Channel Islands, but, according to informed comment, exhibited little in his final twenty years. His most important work was a series of watercolours depicting Jersey scenery and ways of life done during the 1950's, this an example from this series which is generally known from postcard reproductions of the time. Unlike his earlier commercial work this watercolour of a shipwright's yard is meticulous in its detail and full of mysterious colour effects. It has been suggested that the steaks in the sky may suggest ?bomber planes over Jersey, but this is surmise and unfortunately we have been unabel to decipher the tiny date against the signature. A black and white image of this watercolour can be found on the Jersey Historical Society internet site, exact location unknown. The original gallery label exists on the backing board to the original frame which no longer exists.

Paine's work, little regarded in his own lifetime, has been re-assessed in recent years, and while a minor part of his output the somewhat English romantic influenced Jersey series is both rare and of historical importance.
