DESCRIPTION: 8vo, pp xiv, [2, directions to binder/6 line errata], 609, bound without half title, 43 etched plates, including frontispiece and extra vignette title, by R Seymour and Phiz, plus the two 'Buss' plates, bound by Bumpus in full late 19th Century polished tan calf, spine richly gilt with raised bands, double red and black lettering pieces, inner gilt dentelles, all edges gilt, in fine Bumpus binding, FIRST EDITION, EARLY ISSUE.

In choosing a copy of this, the most popular and commonest of all Dickens' first editions, the hardened Dickens collector will have his own set of criteria which are probably quite different from the multitude of criteria the booktrade will throw at him for any one copy. One might say, however, as a generalisation, that the difference between 500 and 5000 pounds is a bit of scratched bodywork and slightly tired inner trim. Refinements, of course, always cost more. .

CONDITION: This copy has no major internal issues except a certain amount of text offsetting to the plates in one part of the book affecting perhaps half a dozen plates; the rest are largely clean, which must be qualified by with caveat that hardly any copy is completely clean [unless washed]
internally with faults as described above but externally with just light rubbing to joints and corners, a most attractive and bright copy.
