[Title in Russian] Das Leben fur den Zaren... Musik von M. Glinka. With: Russlan und Ludmila, Moscow and Leipzig, P Jurgenson [1906]

DESCRIPTION: Pair of Musical Scores being the vocal/piano arrangements of these two famous operas by Glinka each with the upper wrapper designed in colour lithograph by Bilibin. pp 227 and pp 255 with the Russian eagle colophon on the final page and title verso.

Bound in matching contemporary red cloth. Both upper covers are bound without the lower covers which were not illustrated, the Bilibin images dated 1906. The Moscow imprint at the foot of the first in the margin but possibly trimmed off the second in binding, though we have not found it present in any images.

These illustrations were commissioned by Jurgenson for a collection of new editions in piano arrangements of Glinka's major operas that commenced in 1903. They have been much reproduced in subsequent printings which do not do justice to Bilibin's originals.

SIZE: 310 x 235mm

CONDITION: Both bindings a little worn at lower foot of spines and with other minor marginal wear only otherwise in excellent clean bright state.
