London, Seeley and co, 1886 [1885] DESCRIPTION: Large folio, pp viii, 91, [1], frontispiece portrait of the Queen and 11 india proof teched plates, numerous text illustrations throughout, original decorated bevel-edged cloth, gilt. FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY FROM QUEEN VICTORIA , inscribed on a presentation leaf now bound at the end of the volume 'To Victor A F M Biddulph from his Godmother Victoria Reg Christmas 1885.' Victor Alexander Frederick Myddelton Biddulph [1860-1919] belonged to a family closely associated with the royals at Windsor, and Victor as a boy served as page of honour to the Queen, his mother having earlier been a maid of honour to her majesty. He seems to have passed his life at Windsor in some role of service to the royal family and died there in 1919.
