Londiniana; or Reminiscences of the British Metropolis: Including Characteristic Sketches, Antiquarian, Topographical, Descriptive, and Literary by Edward Wedlake Brayley.

DESCRIPTION: London: Hurst, Chance and Co, 1829. 4 volumes, with 103 plates, including folding view and maps, bound in contemporary half dark calf patterned cloth sides, spines richly gilt with raised bands and double dark red labels, marled endpapers.

FIRST EDITION; Brayley was in course of publishing his multivolume Beauties of England and Wales, a work spanning many years. Londiniana was an attempt to provide both an historical and anecdotal account of London which would have popular appeal, not least through its wide illustrative range.

This included multi-folding views and maps showing London's development through time, setting a pattern which would prove popular for many subsequent publications. Other, rather drier, accounts of London's municipal history had been published about the same time in multi-volume form, but the slightly smaller, more compact, presentation , superbly exemplified in this outstanding set, aimed at a wider reading public.

SIZE: 168 x 104 mm (Set)

CONDITION: Minor spotting only and a few small faults, bindings just a little rubbed in places, but a very good and pretty set.

£420.00
